Join our Greener Solvents Seminar to discover practical, more sustainable alternatives for chemical synthesis

The pharmaceutical industry faces significant sustainability challenges, primarily driven by high greenhouse gas emissions, substantial waste generation, and intensive resource use. How companies address these issues is crucial for aligning with the European Union’s target of becoming climate-neutral by 2050. Leading pharmaceutical companies are already taking action to achieve these goals, often aiming to meet them even before the EU deadline.

Within the synthesis market, IMCD Pharmaceuticals is committed to inspiring and supporting customers on their journey through our Greener Solutions programme, designed to raise awareness of green chemistry and promote more sustainable practices.

The Greener Solvents Seminar - discover your greener solvent alternatives

The first iteration of this initiative is the Greener Solvents Seminar, which is based on the principles of green chemistry developed by Professor Paul Anastas. During this seminar, we present greener alternatives that can replace commonly used solvents associated with health or environmental concerns. We also provide guidance on solvent selection for different chemical processes and highlight potential suppliers available on the market.

Key areas for improvement

The Greener Solvents Seminar focuses on several key areas for improvement that companies should consider:
  • Green chemistry: Prioritising the reduction of hazardous substances while minimising waste generation.
  • Sustainable sourcing: Lowering environmental impact by promoting solvents derived from non-petrochemical sources or, where this is not feasible, selecting solvents with more sustainable supply chains.
  • Energy efficiency: Encouraging the use of solvents that enable more energy-efficient production processes.

Key sustainability challenges

Through these initiatives, we help companies address some of the pharmaceutical industry’s key sustainability challenges:
  • Waste management and pollution: The industry generates large volumes of waste, including hazardous chemical solvents. We support companies in reducing the number of hazardous solvents used in synthesis.
  • Energy intensity: Pharmaceutical production facilities often require large amounts of energy, contributing to high carbon footprints. We recommend solvents with lower carbon footprints and options that can help reduce energy consumption during manufacturing processes.
  • Circular economy: Reusing materials such as solvents can be difficult due to strict quality standards and contamination risks. We support this transition by recommending solvent alternatives with improved recovery and recycling properties.
