A Laundry Detergent Formulation that Removes LAS and Lowers Total Surfactant Active Matter while Maintaining Cleaning Performance

Liquid laundry detergent formulations are evolving as the market looks for systems that reduce conventional surfactant loading, remove Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonate (LAS) and still maintain reliable cleaning performance across everyday soils. This LAS-free formulation demonstrates how an alternative nonionic surfactant can act as supporting cleaning technology.

The formulation eliminates LAS completely while maintaining detergency on body soils, cosmetic stains and fatty soils, an alternative for detergent development projects where performance, robustness and improved surfactant efficiency are key priorities.

How a Nonionic Laundry Surfactant Replaces LAS in Liquid Detergent Formulation

The formulation combines an alternative nonionic surfactant with a reduced conventional surfactant system, builder and chelant components, a complete enzyme package and a multifunctional hydrotrope.

The alternative nonionic surfactant acts in a synergistic manner, enabling LAS elimination and reducing the active matter contribution from conventional surfactants such as Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) and Fatty Alcohol Ethoxylate (FAEO). The supporting anionic and nonionic surfactants provide broad soil removal, while a soap co-surfactant contributes to overall detergency and foam control. The builder and chelant system support water-hardness control and formulation robustness, while the enzyme package targets protein-based, starch-based and fibre-bound stains under typical household washing conditions.

More than 30% improvement in Sebum Removal at Lower Conventional Surfactants Active Matter

Despite lowering the total active matter of conventional surfactants, the LAS-free system delivers effective cleaning across multiple consumer-relevant soil types. Testing showed a 36% improvement in sebum cleaning compared with an LAS-based liquid laundry detergent, even containing slightly higher total surfactant active matter, while maintaining performance on lipstick and fatty soils.

Applications for LAS-Free Laundry Detergent Formulation Projects

  • LAS-free liquid laundry detergents: Designed for detergent systems that eliminate Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonate (LAS) while maintaining broad-spectrum cleaning performance.
  • Enzyme-containing laundry systems: Suitable for liquid detergents using enzyme packages to target protein-based, starch-based and fibre-bound soils.
  • Synthetic and blended fabric care: Relevant for cleaning body soils, cosmetic stains and fatty soils on synthetic textiles and blended fabrics.
